D8 Skills #97 & D9 | Unit E | Andy Ford | Session #1

Andy Ford is an immensely talented singer/songwriter. He and I have been talking about working with each other for a few weeks. Today was out first session together.

He played through a few songs he wants produced, and I asked him lots of questions about what sort of production he wants at certain places. I got a good idea of what'll be involved. I LOVE the songs.

This sort of work is what I want to do in my career, so I'm glad Andy exists (along with other reasons too!)

We recorded guitar and a demo vocal for me to work to. Later, I did a little production. Listen below:

We recorded three full takes so that they can be layered and panned. I used a Shure SM57 & Neumann U87.

I sent him these examples and he said that he envisioned more complex drums, and he will sort that out with a drummer. I was a little disheartened because I love the simple punchy beat above, however, it's his song and I'm sure what he's envisioning will sound just as great or better than these. Working with an artist who has their own strong ideas is a good opportunity to be conscious of my self-created individuality, and to keep it aside. The only artist that I've produced for before allowed me to be totally free with my creativity and do what I wanted. That was great, but now I've been presented with a new possibility for growth.
