D8 Skills #25 | Recreating Vocal Technique from Heroes, David Bowie

'Heroes' was recorded at Hansa Studio by the Wall, Berlin. Producer Visconti devised a 'multi-latch' technique whereby there'd be one microphone 9" away from Bowie, a second 20' away, and a third 50' away. The 2nd two would each have a gate on them, and as Bowie sung louder the gates would open, and when he sung quietly, the gates would remain closed. This resulted in a very intimate sounding quiet vocal, and then a large sounding loud one.

Today, we recreated this technique.
